National Museum of the American Indian
Owner: Smithsonian Institution
Architect: Tobey & Davis / Polshek Partnership, LLP
Engineer: Cosentini Associates, LLP
Contract Value: $16.9 Million
The National Museum of the American Indian is a 322,000 sq. ft., multi level museum of the Smithsonian Institute dedicated to the preservation, study and exhibition of the culture of Native Americans. The museum was established by an act of Congress in 1989 and is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The HVAC system for this project includes (70) custom chilled water air-handling units, (3) hot water heating boilers, (3) steam boilers, (43) fans, (29) pumps and several hundred feet of finned tube radiation. Most of the walls in the exhibit areas and all the exterior walls are curved making coordination and proper placement of the work particularly difficult. The building column lines radiate from points, rather than the traditional grid layout. The plumbing systems are comprised of (100) fixtures, (14) pumps, (6) grease and oil interceptors, laboratory vacuum pumps, air compressors, a central drinking fountain system, (9) hot water generators, and a large kitchen and cafeteria.
Tenant Improvements at the Ronald Reagan Building
Owner: General Services Administration
Architect: Ellerbe Becket
Engineer: Ellerbe Becket
Contract Value: $2.6 Million
This project was a full tenant buildout for a state-of-the-art conference center, ballroom, showroom areas and full kitchen and pantries with support areas spread over six floors. All mechanical systems, including HVAC piping, plumbing, ductwork, insulation, and controls were installed in this fully functioning occupied building, without interruption of services to the main building.

This project had a mandated construction period of six months. This short duration required extremely close coordination between the general contractor, engineer, architect, and building trades to finish each section of the project on schedule.

Engineer: Hellmuthl, Obata, & Kassabaum, P.C.
Contract Value: $12.8 Million
This project is a new 304,532 square foot correctional facility located in Clarksburg, Maryland. The scope of work includes the construction of all piping, sheet metal, materials and equipment for a complete mechanical system. The completed work will incorporate the furnishing and installation of the following major systems which will be fully functional, operational and commissioned: (3) centrifugal chillers – totaling 750 tons of refrigeration, along with the associated cooling towers; (23) custom air handling units; (8) custom energy recovery units with associated heat recovery wheels; (9) heating water boilers; (50) variable frequency drives; as well as (1) 10,000 gallon fuel oil tank system.
Ariel Rios Phase 1
Owner: U.S. General Services Administration
Architect: RTKL
Engineer: RTKL
Contract Value: $14.2 Million
The renovation of the Ariel Rios building included the modernization of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning system within the North Phase. This project entailed the demolition of existing systems and the installation of new work without interruption to services in the occupied portions of the basement and first floors. The additional occupancy phasing requirements of the schedule, starting with the seventh floor, meant the new plumbing and HVAC systems had to be operational on the occupied floors while system installation continued on the lower floors.

The HVAC work involved the installation of eight field erected air handling systems, forty-two fans, seven self contained units, one split system, eight hundred and forty fan coil units, four hundred variable air volume boxes, twenty pumps, and 500,000 pounds of sheetmetal. The heating system used a high pressure steam line which is reduced to low pressure at several steam stations. The steam is then run through steam to hot water converters with the resulting hot water distributed to risers serving fan coil units on each floor.

This project included the construction of four office buildings with over one million square feet of office space, a conference center, health club, two security buildings, back-up electrical generator plant and three parking facilities. The main office buildings, conference center and parking garages are connected with pedestrian bridges and walkways.

The HVAC system for this project included four 1200 ton centrifugal chillers and related cooling towers and pumps, over 100 chilled water air handling units and approximately 100 fan power/electric reheat variable volume terminal units. Other equipment installed included a gas-fired incinerator, a 30,000 gallon fuel oil tank farm and a 1000 gallon gasoline dispensing system.
